.........The Royal
Thai Government has established the Higher Education Development
Project (HEDP). which is executed by Ministry of University Affairs
(MUA). with financial support through a loan from Asian Development
Bank (ADB) The HFDP Project aims to develop and strengthen the
standard of higher educational system in order to produce quality
scientists and engineers to meet the country demand and competitiveness
in the international market Seven Subprojects in different fields
were selected on basis of innovative research and the potential
for excellence Cooperation with industry and private sector is
emphasized as an effective means to achieve solution and to develop
technology applicable to the problems.
.........National Research Center on Environmental and Hazardous
Waste Management (NRC-EHWM) is one of the Subprojects approved
for HEDP The environment issues are considered as top priority
for the current status of national economic development Thailand
as a leading country in Asia that shifts its economy from an agricultural
base to an industrial base, is coping with rapid decline in environmental
quality and severe pollution in all media Various chemicals, mostly
toxic and hazardous, are being used, converted and released as
hazardous waste into the environment Without correct and effective
handling and management this poses potential harm not only locally,
but regionally and globally. In addition industrial environmental
performance is being used as market tool and barrier in the international
trade, hence an unavoidable issue to seriously engage.
.........To solve these problems effectively an integration of
various disciplines is essential for the overall planning and
management The NRC-EHWM is established and operated by a consortium
of five pronounced universities to focus on the management aspect
of the environment The five universities, namely. Chulalongkorn
University (CU),Chiang Mai University (CMU),Khon Kaen University
(KKU), King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT),and
Prince of Songkla University (PSU), are sharing the resources
and expertise by networking the central research center at CU
with the satellite centers in order to cover all regions of Thailand.
.........The NRC-EHWM consists of two complementary activities
Research and Development (R&D)and Post-graduate Programs The R&D
is carried out under the center of excellence that pools resources
from universities, government and industry to integrate ideas, expertise
and technology transfer Ultimate outcomes are research findings
and new technologies that are applicable and suitable for Thailand.
The focused areas of research interest cover treatment technology,
remediation technology, ecological and health effect assessment,
pollution prevention, policy development and public education/participation
The Center also provides research projects and facility for personnel
from private sector and industry or students from the post-graduate
programs.
.........Human resource development is a key objective of the
NRC-EHWM. A new international postgraduate program in Environmental
and Hazardous Waste Management aims to produce quality human resources
with the knowledge and skills to manage the environment effectively
Collaboration and partnership with oversea universities in USA
and Australia provides excellent opportunity for the students
to learn about state-of-the-art technologies, the policy and management
system already in place as well as the future global trend.
