Circulating fluidized bed (CFB)
          Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology, compared with fixed bed or even fluidized bed technology, is characterized by high heat and mass transfer intensity; high thermal capacity per unit of cross sectional area; relatively easy scale up; easy control of temperature to keep the temperature profile ideal; flexibility with regard to feed rate and its composition. Our CFB group in the Department focuses on development of circulation fluidized bed combustor (CFBC) and circulation fluidized bed gasifier (CFBG) that has high efficiency and less impact on the environment. The project consists of the following sub-projects:

Combustion of coal and coal-biomass mixture in a circulating fluidized bed
          Coal combustion and co-firing biomass with coal are conducted using pilot scale circulating fluidized bed combustor (2 m. height 0.10 m diameter). The subjects investigated are: the effects of particle size, flow rate of primary air and secondary air, ratio of biomass to air, limestone addition on the temperature along the riser and the quality of gas produced.

• Hydrodynamics of a cold flow circulating fluidized bed
          A cold flow circulating fluidized bed unit was designed and constructed at the Department. The unit consists of a riser (0.1 m i.d. and 6.0 m height), a cyclone, a standpipe, and solids recycle system. A non-mechanical valve (i.e. L-valve and loop seal) is used in this system because it is inexpensive and simple in construction. The objective is to provide knowledge and understanding of relevant factors including air velocity, solid inventory, particle size and density of biomass such as rice husk, saw dust, bagasse etc.

• Pyrolysis/gasification of coal and biomass in a circulating fluidized bed
          The main objective of this sub-project is to study the influences of operating variables, like superficial velocity, equivalence ratio of fluidizing air and biomass, and the ratio of secondary/primary fluidizing agent flow rates on the quality and quantity of gas produced. The effect of using catalyst is also included.
