CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES


T
he following are some of the research activities carried on in the above-listed departments:

- Postharvest preservation of fresh fruits and vegetables

- Thermal properties of fruits, vegetables, meats and seafoods

- Food processing : freezing, dehydration, canning, concentration

- Food fermentation

- Selection and breeding of honey bees

- Apiculture and bee production

- Aquaculture technology

- Genetic variations in Xanthomonas oryzae, sea turtles, black tiger prawns

- Heat shock proteins in soybean and Bradyrhizobium japonicum

- Effects of environmental factors on plant secondary metabolite production

- Mushroom cultivation including cultivation of new fusants

- Use of agricultural and industrial wastes for single cell protein production, compost and growing mushroom

- Collection and in vitro conservation of aromatic plant germplasms

- Veterinary entomology

- Biological control and pest management of agricultural pests

- Toxicology of pesticides

- Use of endotrophic mycorrhizal fungi in increasing crop production

- Use of ectotrophic mycorrhizal fungi in reforestation program

- Use of microorganisms for improving water quality in aquaculture

- Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain collection and selection

- Natural polymers: properties, characterization, processing, and applications





AFFILIATIONS, RESEARCH FACILITIES, and Cooperations


M
ost of the instruction and research activities are concentrated in six departments of the Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University: Biology, Biochemistry, Botany, Food Technology, Marine Science, and Microbiology.



 Additional research facilities are available at

- The Aquatic Resources Research Institute on Srichang Island

- The Institute of Technology for Rural Development at Chulalongkorn University

- Field stations of Betagro Group in Lopburi province

- Field stations of Charoen Pokphand Group in Chanthaburi and Nakhonratchasima provinces

- Field stations of Soon Hua Seng Group in Chachoengsao province

 Our international programs have academic and research cooperation with universities and research institutions in the US, UK, Australia, and Japan, namely:

- University of California, Riverside (Dept. of Entomology), USA

- University of California, Davis (Dept. of Bioengineering), USA

- University of Sydney (School of Biological Science), Australia

- Center for the Application of Molecular Biology to International Agriculture (CAMBIA), Canberra, Australia

- Tokyo University of Fisheries, Japan

- Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan

- Kochi University, Japan

- Liverpool John Moores University, UK
 

 Students will have a research co-advisor from one of these universities and an opportunity to spend a certain period of time in the co-advisor's research facility.

 Visiting professors from these institutions will also be joining our faculty members to give lectures in some courses in Bangkok
